Our pets depend on us for everything, and a good routine makes it easy to remember the little things that keep them healthy and happy. Here's a simple checklist you can follow for dogs and cats.
Every day
- Fresh food and water. Wash bowls daily to keep them clean.
- Exercise. Walks for dogs; active play for cats.
- Potty care. Regular outdoor breaks for dogs; scoop the litter box for cats.
- Quick check-in. Notice their energy, appetite and mood. You know your pet best.
- Cuddles and attention. Bonding time matters as much as anything else!
Every week
- Brush their coat. More often for long-haired pets or during shedding season.
- Check ears, eyes and paws. Look for redness, odour, discharge or anything stuck between toes.
- Wash bedding and toys. Keeps germs and smells down.
- Inspect toys. Throw out anything broken or small enough to swallow.
- Training time. A few short sessions keep skills sharp and minds busy.
Every month
- Parasite prevention. Give flea, tick and worm prevention as your vet recommends.
- Nail trim. If you hear clicking on the floor, it's time.
- Weigh your pet. Small changes in weight are easier to catch early.
- Restock supplies. Food, treats, litter and poop bags.
- Deep clean the crate, carrier and litter box.
Every year (or as your vet advises)
- Wellness check-up with your vet
- Vaccines kept up to date
- Dental check
- Update microchip and ID tag details if you've moved or changed phone numbers
Tips to make the routine stick
- Tie tasks to habits you already have, like brushing your pet while your coffee brews.
- Share the jobs with everyone in the house and write down who does what.
- Keep a record. Writing down vet visits, vaccines and medicine dates means you'll never have to guess.
Our printable Dog Care Planner, Cat Care Tracker and Pet Health Record are designed to make this easy. Print, fill in and keep them on the fridge.
This checklist is general guidance. Every pet is different, so ask your vet what's right for yours.
