Not all dogs play the same way. Some gently carry a plush toy around for months; others can destroy a 'tough' toy in ten minutes. Picking toys that match your dog's chewing style keeps playtime fun and safe, and saves you money.
1. Figure out your dog's chewing style
The gentle nibbler
Carries toys around, cuddles them, maybe chews softly. Often seniors, small breeds and calm dogs.
Great toys: soft plush toys, crinkle toys, gentle squeakers.
The average chewer
Enjoys chewing but doesn't destroy everything. Most dogs fall here.
Great toys: rubber toys, rope toys, tug toys, treat-dispensing balls.
The power chewer
Strong jaws, lots of determination. Plush toys don't stand a chance.
Great toys: toys labelled for heavy or extreme chewers, made of thick, durable rubber or nylon.
2. Pick the right size
A toy should be big enough that your dog can't fit the whole thing in their mouth or swallow it, but small enough to carry comfortably. When in doubt, size up.
3. Mix up the types of play
- Chew toys satisfy the natural urge to chew and can help with boredom.
- Puzzle and treat toys work your dog's brain. Ten minutes of sniffing and problem-solving can tire a dog out as much as a walk.
- Fetch toys like balls and flyers burn energy outdoors.
- Tug toys are great for bonding and teaching 'drop it'.
- Comfort toys help some dogs relax, especially when left alone.
4. Toy safety tips
- Check toys regularly and throw them away once they're cracked, torn or small enough to swallow.
- Remove squeakers, stuffing and loose pieces your dog has pulled out.
- Supervise your dog with any new toy until you know how they treat it.
- Avoid very hard items that don't bend at all. If you can't press a fingernail into it, it may be too hard for teeth.
5. Rotate to keep things exciting
Dogs get bored of the same toys. Keep 3–4 toys out and swap them every few days. Old toys feel brand new again!
